The Heart Behind the Book

This book comes from a lifelong love of dogs, and the hope that every dog is treated with the kindness it deserves. For 12 years, my English Bulldog Bentley was the epitome of perfection. He loved his life and enjoyed every single day of it, and I wish every dog could live the way he did.

When I lost him, I wanted to make something that carried his kind of love forward. Kids felt like the right place to start. The way a child learns to interact with a dog today is the way they’ll treat animals for the rest of their life.

Most kids are naturally drawn to dogs. They want to run up, hug and pet every one they see, while others are a little scared. This book helps turn that excitement or fright into kindness and care. Its pages show what it really means to love a dog: grooming, trips to the vet, playtime, and plenty of love and attention, plus a dog safety page with five simple rules kids can count on one hand, to help them feel confident around dogs they meet. Small lessons like these help kids understand that dogs have needs and feelings too, and grow a kind of empathy that reaches far beyond animals.

In a world where you can be anything, be kind to dogs.
