Screen-Free Activities for the First Week of School
The first week of school is a long one for most kids.
New routines, full days, a lot of mental effort that summer didn't require. By the time they're home, most are running low.
These are easy to set up and give kids a real way to decompress.
1. Coloring pages
Quiet, focused, no setup required. Kids can sit with a coloring book for 20 to 30 minutes without realizing how much time has passed. Keep a stack on the kitchen table so it's ready when they walk in.
Coloring books with a theme: animal kindness, careers, dog safety, the alphabet — give kids something to think about while they color. The page does more work than a blank one.
2. Mazes, word searches, and activity pages
These hold attention for 15 to 20 minutes without feeling like homework. A good activity pack has variety: something to search, something to solve, something to trace or draw. Kids finish one page and move to the next without being asked.

3. Free drawing
Hand them a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw the best thing that happened today. No prompts, no rubric. The results are usually more interesting than anything structured and you get a window into their day.
4. A daily kindness challenge
Pick one kind thing to do before dinner: refill the dog's water bowl, leave a note for a sibling, help set the table without being asked. It takes two minutes and gives the afternoon a different shape. Kids who have pets can make this even more specific — gentle handling, calm voices, paying attention to what the animal needs.
5. Read out loud together
Even kids who read on their own love being read to. Ten minutes on the couch after school resets the energy for both of you. Pick something they're curious about, not something assigned.
The first week of school shapes what comes after. A quiet after-school routine built around coloring, activity pages, or reading is easier to sustain than it sounds and easier to keep once it's started.
